I always get asked this question..."How do you cut open a gourd"? Gourds have a wood like texture, so basically anything you can cut a piece of wood with, you can use to cut open a gourd.
There are plenty of manual tools out there like Hobby Knives with Saw Blade attachments. I recommend everyone trying this way at least one time, because I promise you will appreciate the motorized jigsaw so much more!
The easiest way to cut open gourds, by far, is to use the Proxxon Mini Super Jigsaw. It is lightweight so it won’t strain your wrists, and is so much easier to hold than other jigsaws out there, it just feels SAFE.
If you are using the Proxxon Foot Switch with the Mini Super Jigsaw, then cutting open gourds is a breeze! You can stabilize the gourd with one hand, cut the gourd using the Jigsaw with your other hand, and turn the motor on and off with your foot.
With the help of the Proxxon Mini Super Jigsaw and Footswitch, you can cut open your gourds in just a few minutes (and with minimal labor involved)!

Cleaning the outside of gourds can seem like a daunting task. But if you order them from Welburn Gourd Farm, you'll see that they're actually easy to clean.
To clean Welburn gourds, just soak them in water for 10 or 15 minutes, then scrub them with a stainless steel pot scrubber (we've found that's what works best!).
No soap is needed, although you may need to place something on top of the gourds (like a wet towel) to keep them submerged since they do float!
The reason Welburn Gourds are easier to clean is because of the climate. When gourds are growing, they have a wax-like skin, which protects them until they are dry. In climates OTHER than ours in Southern California, this skin can become baked on in the drying process, making the gourd VERY difficult to clean!
Of course, when you order Welburn Gourds online or over the phone for mail order, they are already cleaned on the outside and ready to craft! (We only ship pre-washed gourds in order to guarantee quality and inspect for cracks or blemishes.)

Have a broken gourd stem? Here's how to easily fix it! (See video Below)
One of the most attractive things about gourds (besides their gorgeous shapes and natural markings) is the gourd stem. The way they curve tells the story of how they were grown. Sometimes they have that cute little twist in them (those are my favorite), or a nice curve to the side. It just adds so much character to the gourd.
I wish all gourds came with stems. But the sad truth is sometimes these stems are fragile and just get lost in the shuffle. With so many opportunities for them to break off, it's actually a miracle some are still intact when they arrive at your home in the box!
You know you're a "gourder" when this situation has happened to you. You open up your box to find the perfect gourd with the stem and…"oh no, I dropped it"! Now some curse words may be flying out of your mouth, might even shed a few tears. Bye, bye stem. For a brief moment, your world is crashing down.
But you don't have to feel that way, because it is SUPER EASY to replace a stem on your gourd!
You can easily add that charm back to your gourd!
Have a gourd top from another project with a nice stem on it? Cut it off and use that stem. Or do it the really simple way and order replacement stems from Welburn Gourd Farm with the dowel already drilled and glued in!
Watch the video below to see how easy it is to replace your broken gourd stem!
