Apple gourds can have darker shells, so we recommend using the thicker, pigment-based Transparent Acrylics over the thinner Ink Dyes. Use a makeup sponge and apply the color with a pouncing motion to build it up and make it go on thick.
You can also use an opaque product such as acrylic paint, which will completely cover the gourd shell, like Joni Hasselbach did on this adorable birdhouse with worm design shown below!
