Faux Basketry Class with Stacy Holtz

Learn how to carve a faux coiled basketry design on a gourd bowl! Depending on the size on the gourd and student’s prior experience, some may finish the project in class. Otherwise, they will be presented with information on how to finish the project at home.

Materials provided (if you have your own tools, you are welcome to bring your own):

  • Pencils
  • Line Marking Tool
  • Sanding Sealer
  • 220 Grit Sandpaper
  • Carved Sample Gourds
  • Black and Dark Brown Acrylic Paint
  • Paint Brushes
  • Paper Palette
  • Finishing Spray

Tools to bring:

  • Carver or Rotary Tool
    • Welburn Gourd Farm does have carvers to rent or purchase
  • Burrs (carbide wheel, Saburrtooth safe (flat) end dovetail, sanding drum burr)
    • Burrs available for purchase in store
  • Woodburner with thin skew or spear tip
  • 6" Diameter thick prepared Gourd
  • Apron
  • Eye protection
  • Ear protection
  • Mask/respirator to protect from dust
  • Pencil
  • Flexible cloth measuring tape
  • Line Marking Tool (optional)

Additional Details:

Due to our rural location, we recommend that you pack a snack or a small lunch to keep your creative energy flowing! Our store will have some limited snacks available for purchase if needed.

About Stacy Holtz

Stacy Holtz has been crafting with gourds for over 30 years. She enjoys teaching classes and helping new students learn new techniques. Carving, sculpting, and weaving are her favorite techniques, though she does also enjoy working with alcohol inks, pyrography, and tackling new ways to embellish gourds. As a graduate of the Bonnie Gibson Teachers’ Academy, Stacy wants to continue spreading the joy of working with gourds to others. Now let’s go see what lies under all that mold😊!
