Earth & Fire with Rosario Wilke (9/25 9am-4pm)

Date + Time: Friday, September 25th from 9am-4pm
Level: Intermediate

Join Rosario Wilke artist/instructor in this new and exciting class.  Inspired by the earth and fire, you will design and carve spirals that travel from the center of the gourd hugging it and floating towards the back, creating consistency and rhythm.  You’ll also execute simple carving techniques to create texture along the spirals adding a touch of mystic.

After the carving is completed you’ll paint the background with Welburn’s metallic acrylic paints using a semi-dry brush technique overlapping and blemishing the layers of paint giving radiance and life to the spirals and around the center of the piece complementing the hammered copper in the center.  You will hammer the copper sheet and inlay delicate copper wire like veins of fire along the spirals.  You’ll then attach the hammered copper piece to the center as a heart of fire creating a striking contrast and natural balance between the humble origins of the gourd and the metal – “Earth and fire”.  Lastly, the sculpture will be set on a stone base!
