Gourd Festival 2025 Class
Date + Time: May 23rd, 9am-5pm
Location: Welburn Gourd Farm
Level: Intermediate
Using one half of a canteen gourd students will create a beautiful medallion. Students will use stick and burn to accelerate the process of the design and to execute a three-dimensional detailed carving technique, creating a delicate and elegant medallion. Students will work on beveling both sides of each element of the medallion to create a center raised line, giving it depth, movement and dimension.
Additionally, they will be working on cutouts on tight spaces and stippling to enhance the background. Students will use metallic acrylic paints and glazing techniques to accentuate the flowing movement of each element of the design. They will inlay copper wire to enhance the depth and give to the medallion a stunning finish.
Instructor will explain in detail a safe process of torching copper wire mesh. Last but not least, students will inlay glass beads to add a splash of contrast and mount the copper mesh and medallion on the canvas.
