Students will learn how to clean, make, and use 2 Native Hawaiian gourd nose flutes, ie ipu hokiokio. They will learn stick and burn transfer technique to woodburn from simple designs. They will learn the cultural history of the ipu hokiokio.

Orders are processed within 5-7 business days before shipping.

We ship orders Tuesday through Friday only. Orders are not shipped on weekends or holidays.

Gourd orders are carefully hand-selected, cleaned, and packed to ensure you receive the best quality possible.

You'll receive a shipping confirmation email with tracking information as soon as your order is on its way.

  • There will be some simple woodburners available to borrow if needed, and other tools to briefly use.

Cancellation Policy:

  • For a full refund, notice of cancellation must be received 14 days prior to the start of class to respect our teacher's time and preparation of materials.
  • Cancellations received outside of 14-day window are non-refundable. Credit may be applied towards a future class.

About Kanani Higbee

Kanani Higbee is an award winning, Native Hawaiian gourd artist. She has worked in education in Hawaii for 15 years. She currently sells her art with Lahaina Arts Society which has been in existence for 60 years. She is well versed in Hawaiian culture since she is a Maui Native, comes from a long line of Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners, as well as her grandpa grew and carved gourds to make instrument for the hula dancers in the family.
She has an Associate in Liberal Arts which she studied Hawaiian language and culture classes. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Social Science from UH West Oahu.
Besides gourds, she also likes to make handmade jewelry out of seeds she grows and forages for in Hawaii.
